During Monday’s Legislative Council meeting, the Police Department asked for a bid waiver to purchase 36 wearable cameras for its officers.
Mario DiNatale, senior IT manager at the Police Department, demonstrated the technology for the council. He said the department spent four months researching different models of body cameras before settling on the Taser Axon model. DiNatale called the camera “cop-proof,” due to its durability and ease of use.
DiNatale said the cameras turn on and off with the touch of a button. They will be worn on a collar around the back on an officer’s neck, and at the end of a shift, all the officer has to do is plug it in to charge and upload. Videos will be stored for at least 30 days and will be available to press and public in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act. DiNatale also said the Taser model took significantly better images during night time, making it the best choice for the department.
